Importance of effective communication skills

Communication is often taken for granted by most of us who simply dismiss it as a tool that we use all the time. Without putting too much thought into it, we actively and passively employ communication skills in everyday life and many of us, unfortunately fail to maximize the advantages of communication. Effective communication allows us to present ourselves in different ways and yet, achieve the same aim; to understand one another effectively. One’s point can be effectively brought across without any misinterpretation or misunderstanding, with any communication channel employed, even e-mails. That is the brilliance and importance of effective communication skills. Being able to master the necessary communication skills, we will be able to translate our point across any channel.

This is especially crucial for dispensing bad news to others to ensure that they understand the point you are making without unnecessary comments on your part. Being able to communicate bad news effectively is a skill that many of us are still learning to grasp, as such conflicts often arise out of such situations.

Concomitantly, effective communication skills enable us to present ourselves appropriately to the people around us, be it our tutors, future employers or simply our friends and family. With the proper skills at hand, conflicts can be minimized, enabling us to extend our social and business networks.

  1. Hi Jihan,

Thanks for your compliment of my blog layout. Yup yours is similar, and it is equally pleasant to the eyes.

The content is clear and concise, and I thought it covered various aspects where effective communication is vital in our everyday lives.

I find the part where you mentioned about dipensing of bad news rather intereseting, since most of us regarding effective communication as the ability to express ourselves adequately, but in such a situation where sensitivity is necessary, it poses a greater challenge as we do not wish to create more grief or upsetness.

  3. Hey Jihan,

After reading your post, it has reminded me of the aspects of communication which most of us tend to miss out in our daily lives. This was especially so about the part on dispensing bad news to people and how to put it across so that people can understand yet you do not sound rude nor hurt their feelings.

It was also easy to relate to the examples that you provided. It was light-hearted, concise and interesting.

    Thank you for sharing :)

I find that people often fail to maximize the advantages of effective communication. There have been many a time when I have been caught in the middle of miscommunication, which usually resulted in a conflict as neither side would be willing to compromise as to who was in the wrong. To avoid miscommunications or misinterpretations, words have to be correctly articulated and accompanied with appropriate complementary non-verbal cues.
Hoping to work in the research sector, teamwork is crucial as discoveries are not made simply by one man. The pressure to succeed may cause unnecessary conflicts as people may misconstrue competitiveness as egoism or selfishness. With the communication skills that I aspire to acquire in this module coupled with life experiences outside the classroom, I hope to succeed in the working world making friends along the way.
